Workplace Policies Exchange Series

Following the publication of Working Positively: A Guide for NGOs managing HIV in the Workplace, the Working Group on Workplace Policies initiated the Workplace Policies Exchange Series in response to challenges experienced by Consortium member organisations in the implementation of Workplace Policies.

The Aim of the Workplace Policies Exchange Series is to stimulate discussion and sharing of experiences and good practice between Consortium member organisations and other interested parties such as government, international agencies, unions and business. The seminars give an opportunity for networking. as well as information sharing.

The Working Group on Workplace Policies was asked to participate in a BEAD meeting on ‘ An update of Workplace Best Practice presented by a Multinational, an NGO and DFID followed by a discussion on the way ahead ‘ Craig Ash Corporate HR Systems Manager Oxfam represented the Working Group and presented on Oxfam’s Workplace Policy, along with Matthews Roberts Project Director /SMART Work and Senior Program Manager, Academy for Educational Development and Sharon Cairnduff, Department for International Development.

Stigma and Discrimination

The first Workplace Policy Exchange Series seminar focused on HIV Stigma and Discrimination in workplace. Fear of stigma and discrimination is one of the major obstacles for staff coming forward to access VCT and other services available under Workplace Policies. This seminar brought together Christina Earl, from UCK working on behalf of Positive Futures Partnership which is a partnership of HIV Charities committed to supporting and improving employment and education and skills prospects for people living with HIV. Julian Hussey, presenting Positive Action at work project is about helping companies to implement their comprehensive policies at work and includes materials including the peer educator diary to share. Keith Winestein from NAT gave an overview of NAT Stigma Campaign presented a new publication for employers entitled ‘HIV @ Work, addressing stigma and discrimination’ and Susie Cox, AMREF presenting on stigma and discrimination in the public sector.
