| The Consortium’s vision is to promote
an effective global response to HIV and AIDS that contributes
to sustainable development. Its mission is to encourage, initiate
and support collaborative action by civil society to contribute
to and influence the global response to HIV and AIDS. |
 |
More than twenty years after the first clinical evidence of acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome was reported, AIDS has become the most devastating
disease humankind has faced. Since the epidemic began, more than 60
million people have been infected with the virus, the majority from
developing countries. HIV/AIDS continues to have a disproportionate
impact upon the lives of people in developing countries. It affects
reproductive and primary health care, economic achievement, education,
welfare and all aspects of development. Whatever the focus, organisations,
businesses, emergency response agencies and governments concerned
about development, need to understand this impact.
The
Consortium represents the collective will of UK based international
development NGOs, academic institutions, government agencies and
other political and civil society actors to work together to understand
and mitigate the impact of AIDS in developing countries. It provides
opportunities for the many diverse concerns and interests to come
together on a regular basis to discuss issues raised by the impact
of the AIDS epidemic. Each agency brings its own experience and
knowledge to be shared and used to help all members improve their
response to the epidemic.
The core functions of the Consortium are funded by membership contributions
and this means that it can maintain an independent voice that genuinely
reflects the concerns of NGOs working in the field.
The Consortium has strong and developing links
with other consortia and agencies around the world that are working
with HIV and development.
